The Map
Each state is colored by how it ranks on the selected metric — red to green from worst to best.
  • Hover any state to preview its value
  • Click a state to load detailed stats in the right panel
  • Click the same state again to deselect back to national view

Color Scale
States are split into 5 equal groups (quintiles). The direction of "better" is metric-specific.
  • Snapshot colors by absolute value in the selected year
  • Change colors by year-over-year improvement vs. decline

Perspective Lenses
Six lenses each show a different angle on state healthcare. Switch lenses to change the entire dataset.
  • Patient — population health & chronic disease
  • Clinical — workforce supply & care delivery

Within each lens, choose a specific metric to display on the map.

Switch between map interaction modes in the bottom bar.
  • Explore — click any state to inspect it one at a time
  • Compare — click a first state, then a second to compare side by side
  • Click ✕ Clear or switch back to Explore to reset

Year Controls
Scrub through 2018–2024 using the slider or ← → buttons. The map recolors live.
  • Snapshot — absolute values for the selected year
  • Change — improvement or decline vs. prior year; label becomes e.g. 2022→2023
  • ◆ USA resets to national view at any time

State Stats Panel
Appears on the right after clicking a state.
  • Value — the state's raw figure for the active metric
  • National avg — comparison to the U.S. average
  • Standing — how many states do better, with a performance band
  • Data year — when this data point was actually collected

Overall System Outlook
An aggregate score across all 6 lenses rating the state's healthcare system from Challenged to Strong.
  • Requires at least 3 lenses with sufficient data
  • The bar on each lens button shows that lens's individual score
  • Updates when you switch states or change the year

Rankings
Below the stats panel, all states sorted by the active metric.
  • Highest — states with the largest raw values
  • Lowest — states with the smallest raw values
  • Movers — biggest year-over-year changes
  • Click any row to jump to that state
